The Southern University Games was opened by Professor Jane den Hollander Vice Chancellor of Deakin University and SUG patron for 2011 Cameron Ling on Sunday night. Vibrant, well-attended, opening celebrations took place at the Pier on the Geelong waterfront with its 180o views of the bay. A significant increase in student-athletes this year will boost the spirit of the event in and out of the arena and Sunday night was testament to that with home town favourite the Deakin Dragons parading their largest team in many years and expressing a renewed vigor to win the overall trophy. However, the Vultures feathers are not ruffled and all remain quietly confident in the VU nest.

VU is to be represented by 204 student competitors and team managers at the 4 days of competition this year, a 70% increase in size from the 2010 winning team and the VU colours were out in force at the opening ceremony and across the day Monday. SUG is one of 3 regional games competitions occurring concurrently across the country and this event will see Universities from across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia compete for pennants in each sport and 3 overall trophies.

The SUG event aims to promote and increase student participation and engagement in activities through competitive sport, emphasizing the social and interactive side of such participation. This year The VU Blue and White will be proudly worn in the sports of Australian Rules Men, Australian Rules Women, Basketball Men, Basketball Women, Cheerleading, Cross Country Running, Hockey Women, Netball Mixed, Netball Women, Soccer Men, Soccer Women, Tennis Men, Tennis Women, Ten Pin Bowling Open, Touch Mixed, Ultimate Frisbee Mixed, Volleyball Men and Volleyball Women.

VU goes into the event as 2010 Overall Games Champion based on per capita and the 2009 Overall Games Champion on points. Going with our largest ever squad to a regional games is exciting and we look forward to a great week of sport, camaraderie and enjoyment at what promises to be a fantastic student experience.

This year the VU Crew welcome our newest sports and teams to the Uni Games experience including; Cheerleading and Ten Pin Bowling and watch for elite athlete Liam Adams as he sets the pace in the individual Cross Country event on Wednesday at Eastern Beach Park, Geelong.

Day One saw some excellent results and close fought matches for VU. The VU AFL women asserted their dominance of the competition early with a comfortable victory over Deakin in what was arguably the windiest game of football ever played at a Uni Games event. It was a good warm up event for the women who look certain to maintain their undefeated record in Uni Games competition from 2010. AFL men were also undefeated Monday. Basketball men notched up a comfortable victory over the University of Melbourne [always nice to go one up there] and Basketball women recorded a near 100 point victory over ACU2…
But Monday’s performance of the day went to one of our new teams for 2011, the VU Vipers Cheerleaders who either won or came second in every category they entered. The 29 strong team performed a series of awe inspiring, gravity defying routines to take the overall Gold and championship pennant the first for VU at these championships.

Day 2 is packed with action with VU set to take to the arena 31 times today. You can collect all the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport
