VULTURES ONE OF THE BEST

Wow, what a final day of SUG 2011. VU playing off in 8 medal games and winning 7 of the 8. It was an emotional finish to the competition with athletes and officials both aware with the increased competition at this years games – athlete numbers are up over 40% from 2010 – that the final overall results were going to be a tussle down to the line.

VU’s AFL women demonstrated again, despite the rigorous climatic conditions, that they are the dominant University Team in this sport barely conceding a point in the competition to win in 77 to 0 over RMIT and cementing their position as the favorite for the Australian University Games in September.

Basketball men maintained their composure in a match delayed by IT – scoreboard failure only to pick up pace as the game was moved to an adjacent court. The team all taking turns to hit baskets from all angles in the last quarter to close out the championship undefeated taking the pennant from La Trobe 85 to 68 in a thrilling final SUG game.

Volleyball women completed the hat-trick of undefeated pennant wins for VU when they closed out Adelaide University’s campaign to take the championship 3 to 0. A strong performance from the VU women who looked to be under an injury cloud earlier in the week.

VU’s 4th pennant was achieved earlier in the week in cheerleading and its 5th in women’s Football (soccer) who also had an undefeated record at the Games. Unfortunately, due to limited competition VU played each day for 4 days against the one opponent, Deakin. To their credit the team maintained their focus through the week, winning each game and never dropping a goal. Several of the team taking the opportunity of lighter competition to also compete in the ten pin bowling event. The women’s football team is a high class outfit with a number of state, premier team or international representatives. They will be strong contenders for the AUG pennant later this year.

AFL men, Basketball women and Hockey women also all had wins each taking the Bronze for their respective competitions. This left the final standing, and a tussle it was, with a 5 way tie for the overall SUG champions trophy. LaTrobe, Monash, RMIT, Deakin and…VU all on equal awarded pennants. After a count back to minor medals the final top five results were:

1. LaTrobe
2. RMIT
3. Deakin
4. VU
5. Monash

1.
It’s worth noting that VU’s win in the Football women was unable to be counted towards points as only 2 teams participated. Had this been included VU would have won overall. However, VU was equally advantaged this year by a new points system based on a medal tally point count that only registers the pennants and medals won.

The minor awards for the Per Capita Trophy went to University of Ballarat and the Spirit of The Games Award was picked up by RMIT. SUG 2011 was a great campaign for the Vultures demonstrating that with each new Games they grow in strength. Preparations are already in place for the Australian University Games, on the Gold Coast in September. SUG 2011 - DAY 3 - VULTURES CIRCLE

Get the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport

An exciting day for VU as the competition gets serious and many sports decide on teams for the final medal rounds.

VU athlete and Male Student Athlete of the Year - Liam Adams took GOLD early in the day in the 12km individual Cross Country at Eastern Park. It was a smooth run for Liam, demonstrating his ability was at a level well above the competition.

Fiery performances were the norm with VU spirit being displayed on an off the field and by competitors and spectators alike. The VU mixed Touch team rounded out an excellent day with 2 wins and a draw to place them in contention for Thursday’s critical games – clearly VU Touch is finding form at the right end of the competition. Basketball women played a well-fought and physical game against long-standing rivals Deakin at the close of the day. The teams were swapping goal for goal for much of the match, exhibiting a series of skillful passages of play but Deakin extended out their lead in the second half to close out the game and move through to the gold medal match Thursday.

At the conclusion of Day 3 VU have 3 teams heading into Gold Medal games or semi finals Thursday. Each team AFL women, Basketball men and Volleyball women have an undefeated record across the week and are in a strong position to take out the gold.

Day 4 will see the VU Vultures in action 19 times across the day. We wish all our athletes the best as they play their final games.

SUG 2011 - DAY 2 - VULTURES UNITE

Get the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport

8am Tuesday, SUG – Day 2…not many of Monday’s 80’s social night costumes remained in sight but the general climatic conditions of the previous day did. It was a day of more great results for VU played in particularly cold and blustery conditions for the outdoor sports. Well done to all VU athletes. (ed note: point of clarification - that VU staff were not still in 80’s costume on Tuesday – they always look like that)

The VU women’s AFL and Volleyball remain undefeated at the end of day 2. Spirits are high in both teams as VU is now well positioned to take gold in Thursday’s all important final game. Basketball men are also look strong with another crushing defeat of 50 points delivered with a smile to Deakin No2 team. Soccer men had some close fought games and the women… are well, clearly too strong for Deakin (the women’s competition has been reduced to 2 teams, VU and Deakin, they play each other each day for 4 days). Hockey women had a great day comfortably dispatching their opposition in both games and VU had a day of strong performances at the Netball… with 4 wins from 5 games over both teams. Netball women looking very comfortable and Netball mixed going down by 2 to U Melbourne in close and spirited game to close out the day of competition. Tuesday also saw the VU Touch and Ultimate teams notch up victories. How our team manages to throw the Frisbee at all in the wind is amazing… well fought out team.

To close out the day VU Team Manager Ashlee Marks brought the entire 204 strong VU team together for the SUG dinner all-team meeting. All team managers reported on results to date before teams regrouped for the evening’s Heroes and Villains function at the Geelong Pier…and judging by the costumes the VU team was taking preparations for the evening event just as seriously as its on field performance.

Day 3 is again jam-packed with action. Wednesday will see our VU teams vying for a position in Gold Medal games Thursday. You can collect all the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport

SUG 2011 OPENS - VULTURES TAKE TO THE SKY

Get the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport

The Southern University Games was opened by Professor Jane den Hollander Vice Chancellor of Deakin University and SUG patron for 2011 Cameron Ling on Sunday night. Vibrant, well-attended, opening celebrations took place at the Pier on the Geelong waterfront with its 180o views of the bay. A significant increase in student-athletes this year will boost the spirit of the event in and out of the arena and Sunday night was testament to that with home town favourite the Deakin Dragons parading their largest team in many years and expressing a renewed vigor to win the overall trophy. However, the Vultures feathers are not ruffled and all remain quietly confident in the VU nest.

VU is to be represented by 204 student competitors and team managers at the 4 days of competition this year, a 70% increase in size from the 2010 winning team and the VU colours were out in force at the opening ceremony and across the day Monday. SUG is one of 3 regional games competitions occurring concurrently across the country and this event will see Universities from across Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia compete for pennants in each sport and 3 overall trophies.

The SUG event aims to promote and increase student participation and engagement in activities through competitive sport, emphasizing the social and interactive side of such participation. This year The VU Blue and White will be proudly worn in the sports of Australian Rules Men, Australian Rules Women, Basketball Men, Basketball Women, Cheerleading, Cross Country Running, Hockey Women, Netball Mixed, Netball Women, Soccer Men, Soccer Women, Tennis Men, Tennis Women, Ten Pin Bowling Open, Touch Mixed, Ultimate Frisbee Mixed, Volleyball Men and Volleyball Women.

VU goes into the event as 2010 Overall Games Champion based on per capita and the 2009 Overall Games Champion on points. Going with our largest ever squad to a regional games is exciting and we look forward to a great week of sport, camaraderie and enjoyment at what promises to be a fantastic student experience.

This year the VU Crew welcome our newest sports and teams to the Uni Games experience including; Cheerleading and Ten Pin Bowling and watch for elite athlete Liam Adams as he sets the pace in the individual Cross Country event on Wednesday at Eastern Beach Park, Geelong.

Day One saw some excellent results and close fought matches for VU. The VU AFL women asserted their dominance of the competition early with a comfortable victory over Deakin in what was arguably the windiest game of football ever played at a Uni Games event. It was a good warm up event for the women who look certain to maintain their undefeated record in Uni Games competition from 2010. AFL men were also undefeated Monday. Basketball men notched up a comfortable victory over the University of Melbourne [always nice to go one up there] and Basketball women recorded a near 100 point victory over ACU2…
But Monday’s performance of the day went to one of our new teams for 2011, the VU Vipers Cheerleaders who either won or came second in every category they entered. The 29 strong team performed a series of awe inspiring, gravity defying routines to take the overall Gold and championship pennant the first for VU at these championships.

Day 2 is packed with action with VU set to take to the arena 31 times today. You can collect all the latest SUG results and updates on the VU Sport Facebook Page www.facebook.com/vusport
