VU Taekwondo Bag More Gold

AUG 2012 Day 2

More excellent results coming the way of VU and one or two adventures as well.

VU Taekwondo continued on their winning way bagging a host of medals in the Poomsae and Creative divisions to take a strangle hold on the higher belt levels in the competition. According to VU coaches the team was in with a chance of taking out the overall title with a series of strong performances, higher numbers and reduced teams from the other Universities. The final results saw University of Sydney in 3rd with 43 points, VU in 2nd with 61 and Monash take out the championship pennant with 87. Well done team. Fantastic results we're very proud of you.

Over at athletics the day opened in fine style with Charlie Blanch recording an outstanding performance in windy conditions to take silver in the 10,000m. A number of VU athletes performing throughout Tuesday and Brendan Ashcroft made the final of 100m against a strong field.

AFL women found their feet well and truly on Tuesday with some strong performances across the team, some fancy foot work from Guesty and a couple of chants of O'Canada from the sidelines in support of our 1st time AFL player  and international student-athlete from Canada.

AFL men are coming together nicely as a coordinated outfit... better than the, "I can't believe you're wearing that" attire they wore to the social function the night before at any rate. "Silver fox" Jack Cafarella, the George Clooney of the men's team commented how impressed he was with how the boys had come from behind to pull off the win early in the day.

Solid day for the Basketball with the women recording a significant win putting themselves back in a positive frame of mind and a series of fine performances from the men to leave them top of their pool.

Ultimate Frisbee had a nail biting game early in the day that dropped against them - the VU team going down by just 1 agonising point. Professional fortitude rebounded the team and set them up for a strong Wednesday after winning in collegial style against UND to close out the day.

Jonathon Wood recorded another consistent performance in the mens golf to finish the day in 5th. Football (Soccer) men, Handball and Beach V are all continuing to perform well setting their respective teams up for medal play-offs later in the week. Netball, Indoor Volleyball and Hockey are also performing well and far better than the scoreboard indicates.
Team Captains Julia Baker and Luke (I'm riding a horse) Renehan took charge of the VU Team in the evening with the unofficial team scribble / dinner - from all reports not exactly a literary occasion. Time will tell if it translates to poetry in motion Wednesday.

Australian University Games 2012 - Adelaide

AUG 2012 in (R)Adelaide have started with a bang... shouts of, "Get around it" can be heard from the VU team right across town as momentum builds for what will surely be a sensational week of sporting competition.

Sunday night saw the VU team familiarise themselves with the scene in downtown Adelaide and enjoy the entertainment of the Opening Ceremony. A 2000 strong crowd revelled to a list of high energy performances including Ruby Rose and Aston Shuffle.

Day 1 has seen high quality and intense competition from the word go. VU performing well and fighting out some close games.
The Football (Soccer) boys have notched up 2 convincing wins and the AFL boys take away a win by 1 point in a tightly fought contest.

Beach Volleyball looking strong and classy with plenty of attitude right across the divisions and Jonathan Woon starred in the mens Golf to be positioned 4th going into Day 2.

Monday's highlight though came from VU's elite Taekwondo squad who once again proved why they are the number 1 program in the country taking 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in the sparring division. With slightly lighter competetor numbers from some of VU's traditional Taekwondo rivals the VU team is looking to big things on Day 2. The Taekwondo program wraps up Tuesday afternoon.
