VU @ AUG - DAY 3 and 4 WRAP

VU AFL women's team prepare to take to the field for the Gold.
Wednesday and Thursday and the Vultures land more medals at the athletics, Judo and position themselves for excellent results in Friday’s finals day.

On Thursday, national representative Ivo Dos Santos claimed gold in his Judo division and winning Champion of Champions and Green and Gold selection for outstanding performance at the games.

In athletics a number of competitors progressed into finals on the track with Rachel Rowe winning silver in long jump and Daniel Pagnaoccolo bronze in triple jump and silver in long jump, while swimmer Tom Houston qualified for finals in his breastroke events.

In the team competitions held over five days there has been some great contests and strong performances from VU. Finals are being held today with our defending national champion Australian Rules Women's team facing RMIT for gold and Basketball Men also defending their national title against Bond University for the gold medal. Netball Women were narrowly defeated by the University of Queensland by 2 goals in the semi and will play Macquarie University for Bronze while the Netball Mixed team also go up against Macquarie for bronze [stop press Friday: both teams win to take Bronze]. Some very close encounters across competitions meant that some VU teams were very unlucky not to go through to medal games including a game hinging on a penalty stroke play off for the Hockey Women who hadn't conceded a goal in the preliminary games, they now face UNSW for 5th/6h placing. Also a week of excellent performance for the VU Ultimate Frisbee team who were unlucky with injuries hampering their chances for a medal finish at the end of the week.

VU @ AUG - DAY 2 WRAP

AUG Tuesday and the Vultures AFL men’s team fought against the reigning pennant holder UWA, a professional outfit, sporting a team strengthened by the end of the recent WAFL season. VU put in a strong performance but were outclassed on this occasion. AFL women, continued to dominate their pool and look the strong favorites to retain their division 1 title.

Over at Runaway Bay (no seriously that is the name) with the Netball, Soccer and Ultimate a day of excellent results saw Netball women finishing the better to UQ by 2 in a nail-biter. There was great team support all day at the Netball and both the women’s and mixed teams were performing well. Great results also for Ultimate winning all 3 games and Football (Soccer) women notching a win against Curtin early in the day.

Back on the Surfers beach the men’s Beach Volleyball chalked up a win in the heavily supported twilight contest against Adelaide and Tuesday also saw an excellent opening campaign for the Athletics with; Leigh Lewellin, Rachel Rowe, Daniel Pagnoccolo and Daniel Aikos all making finals in their respective events.

Martial Arts competitions commence later in the week with Judo Thursday… VU’s international representative Ivo Dos Santos arrives today will be a strong contender for a medal in this high-class field.

VU Taekwondo is likely to control the day in the elite division on Friday and with much of the Games drawing to a conclusion at that point the event is sure to be well supported by the rest of the team. Rumor has it that Sport Manager, Scott Cashmere was putting the Taekwondo team through their paces at last night’s, “Full moon” function to ensure the players were up to Friday’s task

VU @ AUG - DAY 1 WRAP

AUG 2011 opened in spectacular fashion at Dreamworld on Sunday night in the midst of Bag Raiders and a haze of lazar light. The action was perfectly positioned below the Dreamworld ride known as, “The Claw”…apt given the Vulture’s grip on the game in Monday’s action.

The VU Vultures recorded excellent results right across Day 1. AFL men started early with a brutal full length game fronting up against Curtin’s heavies, some of whom could have filled in the front row for the Wallabies. VU too strong for their Western counterparts on this occasion and the team continued to be undefeated for the day. Similarly AFL women flexed their talons today and barely had their feathers ruffled by the opposition in either game winning the second by a mighty 214 to nil.

The great results didn’t end with football with Basketball men finishing the day undefeated, Hockey women notching up a win in their only game and wins in Netball women and mixed, Ultimate mixed and Beach Volleyball women and mixed.

Well done to all competitors for the fine Day 1 performances. Enjoy the relaxation that will come with tonight’s op-shop formal function and we look forward to seeing you all back in the arena bright and early for another full day of action on Day 2.
